Located in an iconic glass pyramid structure in the community of Vasant Kunj, New Dehli, Monkey Bar, established in 2012, has reopened its doors, showcasing the advantages of using Canadian wood in a range of interior design elements in the hospitality sector.

There was no monkeying around when it came to design. The bar’s renovation was led by renowned architect Gurpreet Singh of Aakar Design Consultants. His goal was to shed the traditional dark, moody ambiance of gastropubs and create a contemporary, light-filled “Urban Tropical Dreamscape.”

To bring this vision to life, FII India was brought on board to consult on material selection.

“Canadian wood was our first, and the preferred choice, when we were looking for timber usage for the Interiors at the Monkey Bar,” said Ar. Gurpreet Singh. “We required different properties for the various usages of timber species dictated by the different functions within the same space.”

The project presented specific requirements for the wood:

  • Flooring: Dark and durable for a lively atmosphere.
  • Staircase: Light, smooth, and visually appealing.
  • Bar Countertop: Rich grain, superior aesthetics, and high durability.

Bramola, a prominent custom furniture manufacturer, was chosen to support on the project. Together, Bramola and the architect decided western hemlock and Douglas-fir would be the best fit for the project due to both species having excellent strength properties, workability and beautiful colours. FII India then worked with Bramola throughout the manufacturing process, providing expert advice on wood treatment and finishing techniques.

The new Monkey Bar boasts a contemporary and welcoming aesthetic. The rich grain patterns and warm tones of the wood elevate the bar’s ambiance, creating a space that is both stylish and inviting. From the dark, durable floors to the elegant staircase and the unique bar countertop, Canadian wood plays a key role in shaping the reimagined Monkey Bar. This project showcases the materials’ potential in commercial interiors, supporting the wider adoption of Canadian wood in the hospitality industry. With its stunning design, inventive menu, and vibrant atmosphere, the bar is poised to remain a culinary and social destination for years to come.
