Nestled amongst the Himalayas at an altitude of 6000 feet, the Mandara Tree Villa in Dharamshala, India, offers a luxurious escape with breathtaking views. Named after the Hibiscus flower–known for its medicinal properties–this boutique villa embodies tranquility and rejuvenation. The project showcases the beauty and functionality of sustainably sourced yellow cedar from British Columbia, highlighting its potential within the hospitality sector.
Each of the villa’s 14 charming rooms features a distinct concept, ensuring a personalized stay for all types of travelers. Guests can choose from cozy Swiss Wooden Chalet rooms, the infinity jacuzzi luxury rooms, or opt for the studio apartment floor for group getaways. Additionally, the villa boasts a world-class restaurant and bar which offers authentic meals and cocktails with a view of the Himalayas.
Trehan Doors, the contractor for the project, envisioned creating a “home away from home” while incorporating the luxury of a five-star establishment. To achieve this, the company sought a material that resonated with the surrounding environment and offered exceptional performance. Their search led them to the FII India team, where they discovered the ideal solution: yellow cedar.
Impressed by yellow cedar’s durability, workability, and natural termite resistance, Trehan Doors chose this Canadian wood species for various applications throughout the villa. Yellow cedar’s warmth and natural beauty fills the space, used in everything from doors and windows to ceilings, balustrades, and furniture. FII India supported Trehan Doors by providing information on yellow cedar’s properties, its suitability for the specific climate conditions of the Himalayas, and technical suggestions during implementation. Additionally, FII India facilitated the connection between Trehan Doors and local suppliers, ensuring a smooth sourcing process.
The outcome of the project surpassed expectations. The rich tones of yellow cedar compliment the surrounding landscape, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
